Psychological well-being is an important part of the development of every child. UNICEF works tirelessly for the mental health and well-being of young people – both globally as well as nationally.

Every child has a right to good mental health. However, many of the world’s children and young people suffer from mental disorders. This includes the millions of young people forced to leave their homes each year because of armed conflicts, persecution, climate change or food insecurity. UNICEF supports young people and their caregivers through its program work and partnerships.

 

UNICEF report: State of the World’s Children

Globally, it is estimated that one in seven young people between the ages of 10 and 19 has been diagnosed with a mental disorder. Every year, over 45,000 children and young people take their own lives – that’s one every 11 minutes. The UNICEF report “State of the World’s Children” highlights the causes of mental disorders and shows how protective factors can be strengthened to improve the mental health of young people.

Mental health in Romania

In Romania, mental disorders make up the leading cause of death for children and young people under the age of 19. In 2023, a pilot program was launched in Romania, aiming to identify mental health challenges at an early stage and provide appropriate support for those affected. UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein supports the program.

UNICEF and Z Zurich Foundation are working together to promote young people’s mental well-being. The partnership aims to support at least 11 million people around the world by 2027.

UNICEF study: The mental health of adolescents in Switzerland and Liechtenstein

The results of a 2021 study by UNICEF are alarming. One third of 14- to 19-year-olds in Switzerland and Liechtenstein suffer from mental health problems. One in eleven adolescents has attempted suicide. The study offers concrete solutions.
