National Scout Camp in Valais: UNICEF attends.
Switzerland. From July 23 to August 6, 2022, Goms was transformed into the largest Scout camp Switzerland has ever seen.
UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein was also there.
During every day of the two-week camp, UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein offered several two-hour children’s rights workshops, during which children and young people were made aware of their rights through discussions, puzzles, games, drama and creative activities. With a host of enriching experiences to look back on, the UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein team still has fond memories of a busy and unique time. As well as being able to reach out directly to hundreds of children and young people, the team itself also learned a lot from these committed and interested young people.
It was especially impressive to see which rights these children and young people considered to be the most important. Over the course of the two weeks, younger children very often identified the right to protection from violence (Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) as being particularly important for them, while teenagers mostly opted for the right to health (Article 24). When asked why, they replied: “Because health is the basis for everything in life.”
